Cuando el último acorde de Celebration se apagó en la Cantera de Nagüeles, Kool & the Gang no salió por donde había entrado. Robert “Kool” Bell y el resto de la banda bajaron hacia el público y recorrieron las primeras filas saludando, puño a puño, a quienes durante hora y media habían cantado cada estribillo como si fuera propio. No hubo escenario ni distancia: solo la certeza compartida de haber vivido algo que no se repite en ningún otro lugar.
EL CONCIERTO QUE ESCRIBIÓ EL PÚBLICO
Nada en la actuación estuvo cerrado de antemano. En un momento de la noche, Bell paró la música para pedir algo muy concreto: subir las luces “porque hay muchas señoras aquí esta noche”. Cuando el grito de respuesta llenó la Cantera, la banda dejó que fuera el propio público quien, a fuerza de pedirlo a gritos, decidiera qué sonaría a continuación. “Ladies Night”, “Get Down On It” y “Celebration” llegaron porque los starliters las reclamaron, no porque estuvieran en un guion.
Ese diálogo se repitió en español. Antes de uno de los temas, Bell se dirigió a la Cantera en castellano —”¿Cómo están? ¿Cómo vienen? Somos felices de estar aquí esta noche”— y minutos después la banda interpretó Cherish mitad en inglés, mitad en español, un gesto que solo tiene sentido en un escenario donde el público responde en los dos idiomas a la vez.
MEDIO SIGLO DE FUNK, EN UNA NOCHE IRREPETIBLE
La banda quiso repasar su propia historia sobre el escenario antes de continuar. Presentó a Robert “Kool” Bell como el hombre que lleva, en sus propias palabras, más de 55 años sosteniendo el groove del funk desde el bajo, ganador de Grammy, American Music Award, BET Award, Soul Train Award, NAACP Image Award y Emmy, y desde hace apenas dos años miembro del Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. El repertorio recorrió sin pausa la memoria colectiva de varias generaciones: Fresh, Too Hot, Open Sesame, Jungle Boogie, Hollywood Swinging, Summer Madness, Joanna —dedicada esa noche a una espectadora entre el público a la que Bell pidió el nombre antes de dedicarle la canción—, Cherish, Ladies Night, Get Down On It y, cerrando la velada, Celebration.

When the final chord of Celebration faded at the Nagüeles Quarry, Kool & the Gang did not leave the way they had come in. Robert “Kool” Bell and the rest of the band stepped down toward the audience, making their way along the front rows and greeting, fist bumping and embracing those who had spent an hour and a half singing every chorus as if it were their own. There was no stage and no distance—only the shared certainty that they had experienced something that could not be repeated anywhere else.
THE CONCERT WRITTEN BY THE AUDIENCE
Nothing about the performance was set in stone. At one point during the night, Bell stopped the music to make a very specific request: turn up the lights “because there are a lot of ladies here tonight.” When the audience’s response filled the Quarry, the band let the crowd decide what would come next by loudly calling out their requests. “Ladies Night”, “Get Down On It” and “Celebration” were performed because the starliters demanded them—not because they were written into a script.
That dialogue continued in Spanish. Before one of the songs, Bell addressed the Quarry in Spanish: “How are you? How are you doing? We are happy to be here tonight.” Minutes later, the band performed Cherish half in English and half in Spanish—a gesture that only makes sense on a stage where the audience responds in both languages at once.
HALF A CENTURY OF FUNK, IN AN UNREPEATABLE NIGHT
Before continuing, the band took a moment to revisit its own history onstage. They introduced Robert “Kool” Bell as the man who, in his own words, has spent more than 55 years holding down the groove of funk on bass. A Grammy, American Music Award, BET Award, Soul Train Award, NAACP Image Award and Emmy winner, Bell was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame just two years ago. The setlist moved seamlessly through the collective memory of several generations: Fresh, Too Hot, Open Sesame, Jungle Boogie, Hollywood Swinging, Summer Madness, Joanna—dedicated that night to a woman in the audience whose name Bell asked for before dedicating the song to her—Cherish, Ladies Night, Get Down On It and, closing the evening, Celebration.
