Leila Cobo recibe el reconocimiento a La Excelencia Fulbright 2026 por su aporte a la música y la cultura latina
LA CO-CHIEF CONTENT OFFICER DE BILLBOARD FUE DISTINGUIDA EN BOGOTÁ EN LA CATEGORÍA CULTURAL AND ARTISTIC ADVOCACY POR UNA TRAYECTORIA DEDICADA A AMPLIAR LA PRESENCIA DE LA MÚSICA LATINA Y FORTALECER LOS VÍNCULOS CULTURALES ENTRE COLOMBIA Y ESTADOS UNIDOS.
La periodista y autora colombiana Leila Cobo, Co-Chief Content Officer de Billboard, recibió el Reconocimiento a la Excelencia de la Comisión Fulbright Colombia 2026 en la categoría Cultural and Artistic Advocacy, durante una ceremonia celebrada el martes 21 de julio en la Residencia del Embajador de los Estados Unidos en Bogotá.
La Comisión Fulbright Colombia otorgó la distinción a Cobo por su trayectoria profesional, integridad ética, mérito académico y contribución al desarrollo cultural. De acuerdo con la notificación oficial, su selección fue unánime y el comité evaluador destacó en su perfil los valores de entendimiento multicultural y liderazgo transformador que promueve el Programa Fulbright.
“Una beca Fulbright va más allá de los estudios. Una Fulbright es una llave que abre muchas puertas, entendiendo que todos tenemos nuestro origen, nuestro ADN cultural, pero que también somos ciudadanos del mundo, comprometidos con tender lazos y mejorar nuestra existencia colectiva”, expresó Cobo. “Es un honor recibir este premio de una organización cuya misión me define”.
Creado en 2007, el Reconocimiento a la Excelencia Fulbright distingue a exbecarios cuya labor profesional contribuye al desarrollo del país y al fortalecimiento de los lazos educativos, culturales y de entendimiento mutuo entre Colombia y Estados Unidos. Entre sus anteriores receptores se encuentran el expresidente Juan Manuel Santos, la científica y educadora Brigitte Baptiste y el periodista cultural Bernardo Hoyos.
La relación de Cobo con Fulbright comenzó cuando recibió la Beca J. William Fulbright para cursar una maestría en Gestión de la Comunicación en la Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism de la University of Southern California. Esa experiencia marcó una carrera desarrollada entre los dos países, en la que la música ha sido un vehículo para conectar culturas y ampliar la representación de las voces latinas.
En enero de 2026, Cobo fue promovida a Co-Chief Content Officer de Billboard, cargo desde el cual comparte la supervisión del contenido editorial y las operaciones de la redacción de la publicación, convirtiéndose en la primera persona latina en ocupar ese cargo. Además de continuar al frente de la cobertura de música latina, sumó la música country a sus responsabilidades y participa en la dirección de franquicias como Billboard Latin Music Week.
Nacida en Cali, Cobo es periodista de la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, pianista clásica graduada de Manhattan School of Music, novelista y biógrafa. Desde su trabajo en Billboard ha sido una figura determinante en la transformación de la cobertura de la música latina en Estados Unidos y en la creación de espacios editoriales y profesionales para sus artistas y ejecutivos. También es autora de Decoding “Despacito”: An Oral History of Latin Music y ha recibido reconocimientos como Wonder Women of Latin Music, el Music Industry Trailblazer Award y Leading Ladies of Entertainment.
La estatuilla fue entregada como parte de la Ceremonia de Entrega de Becas de la Comisión Fulbright Colombia, con la participación de Hugo Guevara, Encargado de Negocios, a.i. de la Embajada de los Estados Unidos. Con este reconocimiento, Cobo regresa al programa que impulsó una etapa fundamental de su formación, ahora como una de sus exbecarias más destacadas y como referente internacional del periodismo y la música latina.

BILLBOARD’S CO-CHIEF CONTENT OFFICER WAS HONORED IN BOGOTÁ IN THE CULTURAL AND ARTISTIC ADVOCACY CATEGORY FOR A CAREER DEDICATED TO EXPANDING THE PRESENCE OF LATIN MUSIC AND STRENGTHENING CULTURAL TIES BETWEEN COLOMBIA AND THE UNITED STATES.
Colombian journalist and author Leila Cobo, Co-Chief Content Officer of Billboard, received the 2026 Fulbright Colombia Excellence Award in the Cultural and Artistic Advocacy category during a ceremony held Tuesday, July 21, at the Residence of the United States Ambassador in Bogotá.
Fulbright Colombia presented Cobo with the distinction in recognition of her professional career, ethical integrity, academic merit and contributions to cultural development. According to the official notification, her selection was unanimous, with the evaluation committee highlighting the values of multicultural understanding and transformative leadership that define the Fulbright Program.
“A Fulbright scholarship goes far beyond academics. A Fulbright is a key that opens many doors, rooted in the understanding that we all have our own origins, our own cultural DNA, but that we are also citizens of the world, committed to building bridges and improving our collective existence,” said Cobo. “It is an honor to receive this award from an organization whose mission defines me.”
Established in 2007, the Fulbright Excellence Award recognizes alumni whose professional work contributes to the country’s development and strengthens educational and cultural ties and mutual understanding between Colombia and the United States. Previous recipients include former Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, scientist and educator Brigitte Baptiste and cultural journalist Bernardo Hoyos.
Cobo’s relationship with Fulbright began when she received a J. William Fulbright Scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in Communication Management at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. That experience helped shape a career developed between the two countries, in which music has served as a vehicle for connecting cultures and expanding the representation of Latin voices.
In January 2026, Cobo was promoted to Co-Chief Content Officer of Billboard, a role in which she shares oversight of the publication’s editorial content and newsroom operations, becoming the first Latina to hold the position. In addition to continuing to lead Billboard’s Latin music coverage, she added country music to her responsibilities and helps oversee franchises such as Billboard Latin Music Week.
Born in Cali, Cobo holds a degree in journalism from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana and is a classically trained pianist who graduated from Manhattan School of Music, as well as a novelist and biographer. Through her work at Billboard, she has played a pivotal role in transforming the coverage of Latin music in the United States and creating editorial and professional platforms for its artists and executives. She is also the author of Decoding “Despacito”: An Oral History of Latin Music and has received honors including Wonder Women of Latin Music, the Music Industry Trailblazer Award and Leading Ladies of Entertainment.
The statuette was presented as part of Fulbright Colombia’s Scholarship Ceremony, with the participation of Hugo Guevara, Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., of the United States Embassy. With this recognition, Cobo returns to the program that supported a pivotal stage of her education, now as one of its most distinguished alumni and an international leader in Latin music and journalism.
